Speculative drafters: what they were trained on, with what, and how much of it is actually disclosed

Three compact reference tables: training facts per drafter architecture, a disclosure audit of ~35 published checkpoints, and the public datasets they draw on. Every number links to the page it was read from.

68K→1.4Msamples per head, ShareGPT (2024) to Open-PerfectBlend / Nemotron (2026)
≈38 TBtarget hidden-state cache for one Qwen3-4B drafter (DeepSpec); the real cost line
4 / 35published checkpoints that disclose data, count, hardware, time and recipe

Regenerating responses with the exact target is the single largest data lever; broadening the mix from chat-only to chat/code/math is the second; architectures without EAGLE-1's feature-regression loss (EAGLE-3, DFlash, DSpark) keep scaling with data while EAGLE-1 plateaus.

Draft training itself fits one 8-GPU node in hours to days at any target size; the expensive step is one target pass over 1–1.4M prompts and the terabytes of hidden states it produces, which is what SpecForge, Speculators, DeepSpec and TorchSpec are each built to move.

1. Training facts per drafter architecture

Every competitive drafter since 2024 is trained on the same thing: prompts from a public instruction corpus with answers regenerated by the frozen target. Progress on data has been about scaling that recipe from 68K ShareGPT conversations (EAGLE-1, Medusa, HASS) to 0.5–1.4M mixed chat/code/math samples (EAGLE-3, DFlash, DSpark, SpecBundle) and, at the top end, 6B regenerated tokens (TorchSpec for Kimi K2.5) or ~96B tokens of the target's own SFT mix (Meta production EAGLE). Hardware has stayed small for the drafter and large for the target cache: a head for an 8B target trains on one 8×A100/H100/H200 node in hours to days, while target hidden-state supervision costs 100+ MB per sample, ≈38 TB for DeepSpec's Qwen3-4B cache and ≈7 GB per 128K-token Kimi sample. That I/O cost, not GPU count, is what SpecForge, Speculators, DeepSpec and TorchSpec are built around.

Sizes marked "computed" are from stated layer shapes; "not stated" means the source gives no count, so check the checkpoint's config.json.

2. Published checkpoints: training disclosure audit

Of ~35 public drafter checkpoints audited, only four releases disclose enough to reproduce the run (data, sample count, hardware, wall-clock and recipe): DeepSeek's DeepSpec checkpoints, the community DSpark re-run, TorchSpec's Kimi-K2.5 head and the original EAGLE-1 weights. The vendor zoos (NVIDIA, Red Hat, LMSYS SpecBundle, z-lab, Nebius) name the corpus and usually the sample count but almost never the GPUs or hours; the frontier-target heads (DeepSeek-V4 DSpark, GLM-5.2/5.3 DFlash and DSpark, AQ-MedAI, incoai) state nothing about training at all, and the most-downloaded head, yuhuili's EAGLE-3 for Llama-3.1-8B, ships a 31-byte README.

Findings. Hardware and wall-clock are the missing fields (27 of 34 rows give no GPUs, 30 no time). Data is named but counts rarely are, and regeneration settings (thinking mode, temperature, target precision) are stated only by DeepSpec and Medusa even though they move acceptance by 15–25%. Every frontier-target head (DeepSeek-V4, GLM-5.x, Kimi-K2.6, MiniMax) is a black box. Evaluations are not comparable across vendors: acceptance length at k=2, 7 or 16, tokens-per-call at chain 3, and speedups on different engines and GPUs. Reproducible templates: DeepSpec, alice1001, TorchSpec, Nebius, SpecBundle. Licences gate reuse (incoai is CC BY-NC-ND; SubconsciousDev states none).

3. Datasets used for drafter training

Drafter training draws on about a dozen public instruction corpora, and in every modern recipe only the prompts are used: responses are regenerated by the target before training. Three mixes account for most released heads: ShareGPT + UltraChat (~0.5M chat), Open-PerfectBlend (1.42M, math-leaning; SpecBundle, DeepSpec) and Nemotron-Post-Training v2/v3 (~1.4M+ with code, math, STEM and chat splits; DFlash, NVIDIA, newer SpecBundle heads). Several groups publish regenerated copies for specific targets, which removes the costliest step for anyone training against the same target.

Sizes are the dataset card's counts where the card was opened; "≈" marks counts from memory or from the drafter paper.

RedHatAI/speculator_benchmarks eval only math reasoning, coding, summarisation, RAG Red Hat evaluation of all heads — Evaluation set, not training

Coverage. Chat is over-served; math well covered; code adequate; agentic/tool-calling exists only in Nemotron-v3 and z-lab's 2.8K Cline traces; summarisation, RAG and long-context inputs have no training corpus beyond kimi-mtp-dataset and LongAlign. ShareGPT-trained heads are English-only; Nemotron-v2 adds five European/Japanese languages; no public corpus covers low-resource languages. For a new target, budget one full target pass over 1–1.4M prompts unless a regenerated copy exists (Llama-3.1-8B, Llama-3.3-70B, Llama-4 Scout, Qwen3-30B/235B/Next, Qwen3-Coder-30B, gpt-oss-20b/120b, Kimi-K2.5).
